Update on recent shots fired incidents

COLUMBIA, MO (July 1, 2010) – Columbia Police officers have investigated six reports of shots fired since June 27, 2010. Police believe five of the six incidents are related.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 27th, shots were fired from a vehicle at the intersection of Fifth and Lyon Streets. The suspect vehicle is a gray, silver or black Chevy Avalanche. Officers located seven .45 caliber shell casings in the roadway. Witnesses reported to police that shots were fired from the Avalanche at two or three men walking along Fifth Street. These men have not been identified and there have been no reported injuries. A bullet struck a house on Lyon Street where two residents were home, but no one was injured.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., shots were fired from a red Pontiac Grand Am in the 800 block of Clinkscales Road. The car had tinted windows and a white sticker in the driver’s side rear window. Officers collected shell casings at this location, as well. Eight .45 caliber shell casings were recovered, in all. An exterior window at a home at 1606 Patsy Lane was struck by one of the bullets. No one inside the residence was injured.

Later in the evening officers responded to another shots fired call at Tiger Village Apartments but located no shell casings. Witnesses advised they heard shots coming from the 500 building, but when officers interviewed individuals at that location, they denied having fired any shots. Columbia Police officers do not believe this incident is related to the others.

On June 29, at approximately 5:30 p.m., officers responded to calls of shots fired from a moving vehicle. Witnesses advised shots were fired at Fourth Avenue and Pecan Street; and other witnesses told police shots were also fired along Wilkes Boulevard near Rangeline Street. A red sedan was seen chasing another car with varying descriptions. Police were told it was a white SUV, white van, and silver truck, by different witnesses. Police investigators must consider that there may have actually been three vehicles involved because of the varying descriptions. .45 caliber shell casings were recovered in this incident, as well.

Later in the evening, shots were fired from a four door red vehicle,
in the 1400 block of Greensboro, and a home at 1411 Greensboro was struck by one of the bullets.

On July 1st, just after noon, shots were reported in the 500 block of west Ash Street. A blue van forced a red car off the roadway and shot at its occupants. The van had been reported stolen and was later located and towed by Columbia Police officers. Individuals associated with the red vehicle were located and interviewed.

Police are following many solid leads and have identified the individuals responsible for the shootings. They are working to develop further information about the victims in the earlier shootings (the intended targets) as these people have not come forward. They are also working diligently to determine the whereabouts of the shooters, the drivers of the vehicles, and their associates.

Anyone with any information about these incidents is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 875-tips.
